A Strange Foreigner’s Take on Things Japanese
As the dragon’s fire has been quenched and the snake is slithering in it’s a good time to stop and think about what makes Japan an interesting place to live. In no particular order, here are my top 5.
1. The Honesty of Japanese People
At least twice during my now 28 years in Japan I’ve mistakenly left a bag of personal effects including cash and credit cards somewhere and in both cases my goods have been turned in to the police with the person doing so not giving his address so I could send a gift as a reward.
2. Traditional Japanese Music
I’m not talking here about enka or j-pops. I love to listen to shamisen, koto, sho, shakuhachi, and so on. The melodies of these instruments are haunting and beautiful.
3. Japanese Movies
Akira Kurosawa’s films are classic and, of course, everyone likes Ghibli animated movies. My personal favorites are the comedies Swing Girls, Water Boys, as well as the Tora san films.
4. Japanese Fashions
People talk about the beauty of the ladies in Japan and I think that it comes from the talent of women who make the most of what they have.
5. Japanese Food
Japanese cuisine is both beautiful and delicious. Their ability to take dishes from other countries and Japanize them is fascinating.
