Berlitz English School

One of the Largest Language School Chains in the World

Berlitz English School - Teach English in Japan!

Pictured: Mount Fuji by Richard Baladad

Founded in 1878 by Maximilian Berlitz in the USA.

Berlitz teaches through the direct method (or through the target language) only. The feeling is that the more exposure to the language that students receive, the better they will be able to understand the language, and the better able they will be able to work out the grammar rules.

Their Employment Site for Japan:

Required: a Bachelor`s Degree

Salary: 250,000 and up

The current salary starts at 250,000 yen a month. Pay raises are based on an annual performance review and currently average 1 to 3% a year.

Contact Hours: 22-23 per week

Address:

Shin Aoyama Bldg., East 16 F 1-1, Minami Aoyama 1-chome Minato-ku, Tokyo 107-0062

They also offer franchise opportunities.Their franchises are much more expensive than some of the other schools that offer them. Then again the Berlitz name is famous around the world.

I was trained in the Berlitz Method. It is an interesting way to teach especially for beginners. They use a lot of visual aids and a manual. You must stick close to the manual to emphasize the important teaching points in each lesson.

I enjoyed using the visual aids to teach and I felt it was a good way to get students from false beginner level to actually speaking English.

The classes I taught were small - from 1-4 students usually. I think for the first year or so of formal English conversation study the Berlitz method is good.

After that I feel though, that using a good textbook is worthwhile.
