Can Non-Native English Speakers Teach in Japan?

Hi there,

My name is Paola and I am Italian. Currently I live in London (where I have been living for 6 years) and some time ago I decided to go to Japan for a while. Therefore, I attended and passed a CELTA course to be able to find a job there.

Now that it is finished and I am actually looking for a job from here, I was wondering whether I could get a teaching job in Japan, even though I am not from an English speaking country.
For your reference, I have a master's degree, taken in Italy.

I would appreciate it if you could give an advice.

Many thanks

Kind regards
Paola

Where to find teaching jobs in Japan?
by: Kevin Burns

Hi Paola,

Check out our pages on the Big schools:

http://www.how-to-teach-english-in-japan.com/teach-in-japan.html

Some of them hire non-native speakers. An Italian
friend of mine taught English at Nova.

I know of a German who taught for the YMCA in Japan.

Schools in the countryside--away from the big cities might hire you. It is difficult to get good teachers. Universities will hire you--do a google search for Arudo Debito`s site on universities in
Japan.

He has a greenlist and a blacklist. Apply to the universities on both lists. The blacklisted universities are still good--slightly less green LOL.

Check our lists of schools A-E etc
http://www.how-to-teach-english-in-japan.com/good-english-schools-japan.html

Schools outside of major cities will hire you.

Kevin

Can Non-Native English Speakers teach in Japan?
by: Kevin Burns

The short answer is: YES

My Italian friend taught at Nova long before it
went under. He had lived in America for six
years, so his English was very good.

But of course your chances increase the better your English is, and the more training and experience you have.

Having a Master`s degree will help you a lot.
Why not apply to teach Italian at a university?
And supplement when you get here with extra work
teaching English at some schools or companies.

I know of Russians, Germans, and native French
speakers teaching English in Japan. So it is
definitely being done but a bit more challenging
for non-natives to find an English teaching position.
