Christmas Related Find the Picture

There are Christmas vocabulary exercises you can use where you present Christmas related pictures to your students to name. One of them is find the picture. Have seven Christmas picture cards, teach them the vocabulary by repeating after you, then secretly remove one picture (hide it) and see if the students can discover which picture is missing. The winning team gets one point.

Then there are sites listing out Santa and Christmas related questions you have to ask your students, and make them answer in their own sentences.

Create interaction between the students by bringing in some gifts, or drawing them out on the board, and asking each student to explain to the others why they want or need those gifts.

If you have a multi-cultural classroom, have each student describe what Christmas is to them, and what they do for Christmas. You could also create fun debates on Christmas by dividing your class into pairs or groups, and giving them fun questions to debate about.

ie) Where is Santa really from?

Is he married?

Does his refusal to use Rudolph at first signify a form of prejudice?

Christmas Writing Activity

Christmas is the season of love and giving, so ask your students to describe special relationships in their lives like the relationship between them and Santa, parent and child and teacher and student. Have them write a paragraph on it.

Christmas Writing Activity 2

Ask your students to list what makes Christmas special to them; it could be presents, cakes, alcohol, holiday, church or the Christmas tree.

The Great Scrooge Debate

As the penultimate Christmas ESL lesson, divide the class into two; Santa students who love Christmas, and scrooge students who detest it.

Let Santa students discuss ideas to prove why Christmas is so lovely, and give the Scrooge students time to find reasons to prove why they hate Christmas. Let your students role play in pairs, voicing their individual reasons and ideas about Christmas.

The scope is unlimited for Christmas ESL lessons; you just have to use your imagination, think like a child to imbibe the Christmas spirit and you will definitely come up with even more better and innovative ideas!
