Computer Vocabulary

Here is a list of the computer vocabulary you should teach your ESL students.

Application: Applications are the programs that are designed to complete specified tasks. Applications are also called computer software or program.

Bug: A bug is a defect or a problem in a program that keeps it from working correctly.

Backup: A copy of file on disk of floppy or some other medium is called backup of the data.

Cache: Cache is a memory that helps computer in working faster.

CPU – CPU is the abbreviation Central Processing Unit, it is the brain of the computer.

Crash: If a program completely stops working or the entire operation fails, it is called crash.

Driver: Driver is a software that enables a hardware in computer to work, such as a driver for the printer will allow the printer to work.

E-mail: Email is the abbreviation of Electronic mail, the messages that are sent from one computer to another via internet.

Folder: A division of a computer’s hardware, where you can put files.

Format: Format is to clean the hard disk automatically. If you format a drive, all the data in it will be removed.

Modem: Modem is a device that allows a computer to send and receive data using internet.

Operating System : The basic software that manages a computer. Resolution: The number of pixels per inch that are used to create a screen is called resolution.

Scanner: A Device that can convert paper documents in to electric documents.

Virus: Software that enters the computer, spreads by inserting copies of itself, and creates problems in the working of computer.

Windows: An operating system used by the majority of PCs.
