Japanese English Dictionary Reviews

Japanese English Dictionary, which one to buy?

I too am looking for the ultimate dictionary. It should have the words I need to look up and it should be easy to use. If possible it shouldn`t be too expensive.

I had one of the older electronic dictionaries by Sony but Ifound it too complicated and actually cumbersome to use. I rarely used it. I finally gave it away.

The Japan Foundation Basic Japanese-English Dictionary

(Bojinsha)

I don`t recommend it at all! Like the name says it is very basic. It is so basic in fact, I often cannot find the word I am looking for! Not recommended. Pros: Does have a lot of romaji whichis helpful for people new to Japanese. Cons: as mentioned above.

Obunsha`s High Top English-Japanese Japanese-English Dictionary

(Obunsha)

This is a good dictionary for Japanese studying English butnot for non-Japanese. I think most non-Japanese won`t beable to read the explanations (which are in kanji) nor the words(same) for their English equivalent. In short: a good dictionary for elementary to low intermediate Japanese learnersof English.
