Post TEFL Article - How to Learn English Vocabulary

Learning English vocabulary can be rather difficult. It is not made any easier by the fact that many words have several possible meanings. There are also many homonyms, which are words that sound the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings. All of this complication makes the English language one of the most difficult languages to learn, and trying to learn English vocabulary is just one part of that.

Thankfully, there are many tools and techniques at your disposal to help you learn English vocabulary much more easily.

Dictionary Help

The first one of the things you need to do when trying to learn English vocabulary is get yourself a pocket dictionary. Everything you need to learn is in that dictionary. Each time you come across a word you don’t know, you can look it up. You should also carry a pocket memo pad and pen with you. Write down the word and its meaning, or at least the page of the dictionary the word is on. You can then go back to your word list later and study the words you don’t know so that you can become proficient with them in the future.

Vocabulary Worksheets

Vocabulary worksheets
are plentiful and can be found all over the web. These worksheets are generally in the form of fill in the blank or crossword puzzles. Either way, you will quickly learn English vocabulary if you do enough of these worksheets. Remember, learning vocabulary is essentially an exercise in memory retention. The more you deal with problem words within these worksheets, the more likely you will be to remember the words in the future.

Vocabulary Workbooks

If you find that you are not satisfied with the free vocabulary worksheets you can find online, you might consider looking for vocabulary workbooks. These are generally fairly inexpensive when you buy them used or online. Some colleges offer classes in vocabulary or reading comprehension that can also help you learn English vocabulary quickly. These workbooks consist of many of the same types of worksheets that you can find online, but often have more difficult words that are not found in the online versions.

Practice Makes Perfect!

Do not become discouraged if you use any one or all of these resources and still have trouble trying to

learn English vocabulary.

Some people have more trouble learning new words than others. Remember that practice makes perfect! You need to practice using your new vocabulary words whenever possible in writing and in conversation. This will help you to remember what the word means and how it should be used. This practice in combination with any of the above resources and techniques should help you to learn any word you could ever need to know.
